Deadmans Lane to stay one-way

RYE’S dangerous Deadmans Lane is to me made permanently one way.

The decision, announced this week, follows the success of an experimental highways order.

The one way route, westbound from Rye Hill, will become permanent from Monday.

It follows years of campaigning by local people, whose cause was taken up by Rye county councillor Keith Glazier.

Deadmans Lane is so narrow that it is impossible for two vehicles to pass in places and dangerous situations have occurred where vehicles have had to back out onto the busy Rye Hill A268 A-road.

The scheme was brought in seven months ago and developed in consultation with local home owners.

It introduced a one-way system westbound on Deadmans Lane from its junction with the A268 to Hillyfields footpath; a reduced speed limit from 30mph to 20mph along the whole length of the lane and ‘no waiting at anytime’ restrictions on both sides of the lane at its southern end .

James Holland, from East Sussex County Council., said: “After monitoring and reviewing the scheme, it has found to have successfully resolved the problems in Deadmans Lane and will be introduced on a permanent basis.”

Councillor Carl Maynard, Lead Cabinet Member for Economy, Transport and Environment said, “I am very pleased that this scheme has been successful and resolved the traffic issues we have been discussing with local people.

“By working with local people and introducing these changes on an experimental basis we left room to make any tweaks that may have been needed. But as our monitoring has shown that traffic is now better accommodated and everyone seems very happy with the way it is working, we can now make these changes permanent.”

Cllr Keith Glazier said: “After years of campaigning it is great that the people of Rye and the surrounding villages have a permanent one way approach to Rye from the north. This access into the Town caused a lot of difficulties for many years its great that this has been resolved in a sensible cost effective way.”
