Death of soldier inspires pub’s fundraising events for heroes

The Shelley Arms hope to raise around £5000 for Help for Heroes with their main charity event on Saturday, June 22, following Drummer Lee Rigby’s death in Woolwich on May 22.

“It was after that seeing that awful news which spurred us on to do it. “ explained 27-year-old event organiser Alex Vallance.

“Once a year we tend to have a big charity day down here but this is the first help for heroes one we’ve done.”

Between 12 noon and 12 midnight, the pub, in Old Guildford Road, will hold raffles, auctions, waxing local men, car washing, face painting, a ‘Man vs Food’ challenge and much more.

“The landlord Richard Kent will be donating 20p for every pint sold as well and this Friday there will be 24-hour pool and darts games,” she continued. “We’ve got live music all day and evening with bands giving their time for free.”

On Sunday, June 16, Hugh Lawrence and Brandon May dressed as Batman and Robin and rode their bikes 45 miles raising around £500 for the cause.

A bungee jump is arranged in on July 2 with each person raising a minimum of £60 to enter will be held in the carpark alongside an army tank.

Alex said: “We have lots going on and the local community has really pulled together and already raised over £2,500 in sponsorships . I’m very excited, it should be a great day.
