Dedications' practical aid

SO many people turned their grief at the loss of a loved one to practical use that Mummery's funeral directors have presented £1,100 to St Michael's Hospice.

Last year when Mummery's invited the public to hang their personal tributes on Christmas trees at the firm's offices in Devonshire Road and in Sidley they raised 622 for the hospice.

This time so many dedications were hung on the trees that it was difficult for staff to find space for more.

On Tuesday, hospice fund-raiser Jenny Tyrrell was at the Devonshire Road office to receive a cheque from Paula Dale and Peter Morrison of Mummery's.

Paula said donations in lieu of loved ones ranged from 50p to a generous 200.

"We are really chuffed with the result. Even before Christmas we were over 1,000. We are really pleased. People have been so generous.

"The most touching thing for me was a young girl outside with a child in a push chair. She wasn't from round here but her husband had died in Iraq..."

Jenny Tyrrell said: "I would just like to thank everyone very sincerely - everyone who has made a dedication and the staff here.

"It is a fantastic amount of money."

Thanks to the generosity of the public, Mummerys were also able to give 26 selection boxes of chocolates and two toys to St Jude's Women's Refuge and another 20 selection boxes to Sidley Baptist Church.
