Deer caught in netting in Southwater freed by RSPCA

An RSPCA inspector has rescued a young deer who had become completely entangled in the netting of a football goal in the garden of a house in Southwater.

The owners of the house in Reeds Lane spotted the deer early on the morning of Friday September 20 and monitored it from a distance until the inspector arrived.

RSPCA deputy chief inspector Tony Pritchard said: “The deer’s head, body and legs were completely trussed up by the netting.

“She must have been exhausted from struggling to get free and quite shocked because when I freed her she just lay there for several moments.

“I had to encourage her to get up but when she did she trotted off quite happily showing no signs of injury.

“It is a reminder that you must check that your hedges and fences are secure if you are in an area where there are deer and take care to put away sports equipment with netting when you are finished with it as it can cause a hazard to other wildlife as well.”
