Demand for action against spiralling yobbery

Action has been demanded by Bersted parish councillors to stop yobbery spiralling out of control.

The angry council members said their residents had no faith in the ability of the police to maintain law and order.

Council chairman Cllr Brian Knight said: "I think we have lost confidence in the police."

The councillors expect MP Nick Gibb at their August meeting to hear their concerns. They hope his presence will prompt a senior police officer to finally attend as well.

Gez Watson told June's council meeting the level of anti-social behaviour on the Trees estate was bad '“ and getting worse.

She said the problems were acute on Friday and Saturday nights.

"The kids start drinking at 8pm, by 9pm they start getting tiddly, by 10pm they start getting stupid and by 11pm they are starting to get on everybody's nerves.

"By midnight, that's when all hell breaks loose with fighting, screaming, shouting and hollering. And that's what is happening. You can set your watch by it at 12.10am every week."

Simon McDougall warned: "Gez has only scratched the surface of what has been going on on the Trees estate in the last few weeks. Some of the stuff I have had correspondence about as a district councillor is extremely concerning.

He said the problem of anti-social behaviour was widespread in the outer parishes around Bognor Regis town centre.

"The police go to the nightclubs in the town to patrol there. Yet it is the law-abiding council taxpayer elsewhere that ends up paying the price because of the inadequate number of police."
