Des serves up Angmering club’s anniversary treats

Blue skies and autumn sunshine were the icing on the anniversary cake as Angmering-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club celebrated its golden jubilee.

Television sports presenter Des Lynam, a member of the club for many years, and who lives nearby, cut the celebration cake, made by member Alison Ellis for Saturday’s open day, attended by about 150 members past and present, and guests.

A club tournament in the morning was followed by a hog roast lunch and then a “whites” exhibition event with wooden racquets, players (mostly) in white kit and serving with white balls, as they would have done when the club opened in 1962. Martin Lee, former GB no. 3, and son of club performance coach Brian, defeated club champion Paul Hyde in a challenge match and the day ended with a 1960s disco.
