Designs for revamp of Montague Street considered ahead of October consultation

Architect firm ECE has presented two main options for the re-design of Montague Street to the Town Centre Initiative, and after a steering group meeting on September 17, the plans will be released.

Traders have been presented with the plans, and town centre manager Sharon Clarke said there was a strong preference from them.

But the public will have the chance to have their say before ideas are finalised.

She said: “We feel the Montague Street revamp is such an important programme for Worthing, and we are doing the consultation ourselves to keep the costs down.

“There is a preference from the business community, and we will be taking the proposals out for full consultation in October.”

The county council funding for the improvements was announced earlier this year, following lobbying by Worthing Borough Council, which felt not enough money had been re-invested back into Worthing.

Black tarmac and temporary repairs will now be replaced by fresh paving slabs, and other features, subject to positive consultation.

Mrs Clarke said: “I think everyone wants something that is going to be long-term, and if we can deliver this, which I have every confidence we will, Montague Street will have a legacy for the next fifty years.

“It will look very different.”

The designs will be revealed in the Herald following the meeting on September 17.
