The crime took place at about 9.30am on Saturday (March 28) when a man knocked at the door of the home at The Old Stables, in Grassmere Close, enquiring about gold.

The homeowner, who is in his early nineties, allowed the man into the house to show him some gold coins and other items.

Once inside a second male who he had not noticed before had also entered the room.

While they were looking through the items the resident moved out of sight of the men and when he returned he realised they had left, taking with them two gold coins with Winston Churchill’s head on them.

The combined value of the coins is believed to be about £1,500.

Detective Constable Emma Fields said: “This was despicable theft from an elderly and vulnerable man.”
