Berkeley Homes’ four pledges to the village are: to create a beautiful place, deliver the infrastructure needed to support the new homes, listen and engage with local people, and invest in the local economy.

Horsham District Council is currently deciding where to build houses over the next 20 years with Berkeley’s scheme one of several strategic sites proposed.

The developer also has an application for 500 homes on part of the same site in abeyance.

Adrian Brown, managing director at Berkeley Strategic, said: “We realise the council has a difficult decision and there are a number of options.

“What makes Berkeley’s offer different is two things: our approach to place-making and our ability to deliver. We control this land. We have the finances in place. We won’t parcel land off to lower quality developers – we will build the homes ourselves, showing extraordinary attention to detail. Our staff will personally work with local people – we will not have consultants leading the process.

“When you build at scale, as we are proposing at Southwater, you can deliver the kind of community where people really want to live, with all the facilities that make a strong community: a new school, recreation and sports facilities and major transport investment.”

Other touted benefits include a link road to Hop Oast, improvements to the existing junction, and added bus services.

Keep Southwater Green has vehemently opposed any large-scale development in and around the village.
