Roffey Homes proposed development on the corner of Grand Avenue and West Parade

Developer Roffey Homes has submitted a plan to Worthing Borough Council to build a block of 36 flats on the corner of Grand Avenue and West Parade, Worthing.

The development includes eight affordable homes and 34 car parking spaces, including 26 underground spaces.

The height of the flat block will be staggered, ranging from three storeys tall up to 11 storeys tall.

Sheila Henshall, 79, of Grand Avenue, Worthing, said the building currently situated on the development site was an ‘absolute eyesore’.

She said: “Whichever direction you’re coming from, it looks a real mess. They should smarten it up, but if they put a big high block there it is going to look awful. It’s the height people are worried about and the traffic on the corner. It’s going to block off the whole view.”

Two alternative bricks are used in Roffey’s design, with a white render used for the penthouse apartments. Landscaped gardens and private amenity space for residents are included in the scheme.

Developer contributions would be directed towards renovating and upgrading the promenade area at the end of Grand Avenue in a similar way to how Roffey’s Eardley development in East Worthing led to the redevelopment of the Splashpoint area.

A statement issued by Roffey said: “The aspiration has been to provide a new building which positively marks the location of and provides a frame to the end of Grand Avenue, in a similar way to Marine Point, whilst enhancing the architectural quality of the seafront more generally.

“The colour palette has been derived from pebbles taken from the beach to ensure that the building blends successfully with the locality.

“Overall, the scheme responds fully to its neighbouring environment, providing a positive addition to the skyline in views from all directions.”

Roffey added that the design had been ‘fully informed by the surrounding built form’.

The council has issued letters to surrounding residents informing them of the proposal.

They have 21 days from the date of the letter to provide a comment.
