Developer wants to build on nursery site

A developer wants to build 28 flats and houses on an old nursery site.

The land is the Clayhill Nurseries site, just off the A26 in Lewes.

Developer Blue Sonic, which last year built 24 homes on the adjacent land, has applied for permission to build residential properties and more than 2,000 square metres of office space, on land to the west and south the former nursery off Malling Street.

Last October it put forward an application for 33 homes but withdrew the proposal after talks with planners at Lewes District Council.

It is understood the district council had hoped the land could be used for industrial use but the developer said this was 'unviable'

Instead Blue Sonic has reduced the number of flats and houses in the application, increased the amount of B1 development land (which is for commercial purposes, most often used for offices).

Plans also include 38 car parking spaces for the homes and 49 for the commercial land.

In a statement to planners the developer noted: 'It has been carefully designed to ensure that the relationship with near-by residential business developments in acceptable.'

The application will be considered by Lewes District Council.
