Developers have submitted plans to build up to 238 homes on the site of a former school in Seaford following a public consultation last year..

Jaynic Properties Limited say they have now submitted an outline planning application for the site, which surrounds the Newlands School in Eastbourne Road.

The developer says it intends to convert, rather than demolish, the old school building if the plans are approved by Lewes District Council, as residents said the unlisted school was a site of local importance.

It also says they plan to keep around 50 per cent of the site as green space, which it plans to make into a public park area. Developers say the landscaping on site will be designed to respect and retain both the school building's current setting as well as the nearby Sutton Place, which is a grade two listed building.

Nic Rumsey, managing director of Jaynic Properties Limited, said: “Our proposals provide an opportunity to create an extremely attractive residential scheme in a wonderful setting. The site is one of the only major sites available in Seaford, with any expansion of the town constrained both by the sea and the surrounding South Downs National Park.

“Our planning application was first prepared, then refined, following extensive discussions with council planning officers, district and town councillors; and follows a public consultation event at the end of last year where there was a broad consensus in support of the residential development of the site.”

The developer also says it will be making a financial contribution to improve Seaford's facilities and infrastructure through a through Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) payment.
