Development ‘will enhance bank balance, not seafront’

THE ‘ONLY thing that will be enhanced’ as a result of a developer’s latest seafront development is its bank balance, concerned residents believe.

Phil Abbott, representing Regis Court residents, in West Parade, Worthing, was less than impressed at Roffey Homes’ plans for a dilapidated site on the corner of Grand Avenue.

He said: “They claim high-rise development will enhance the seafront. That is an absolute load of nonsense.

“The only thing it will enhance is Roffey’s bank balance.”

A public exhibition to discuss the plans was held in Marine Parade last Wednesday,

Roffey plans to turn the on-the-corner site into 37 flats, seven of which will be affordable.

The design will be stepped, with the highest point being 12 storeys.

But while many recognise the need for redevelopment of the existing building, concerns remain the height is a step too far.

Kris Waran, chairman of the Dolphin Lodge block, said: “My concern is it is only a matter of time before everyone jumps on the bandwagon and we end up with a seafront like Benidorm.

“I don’t understand why Roffey wants to sacrifice what was a good reputation by going for skyscrapers. We will keep fighting it.”
