Devonshire Road revamp under way

WORK to revamp Devonshire Square into a no-parking piazza continued this week as contractors began taking up the old Tarmac surface and improving the drainage system.

The job is expected to take another six or seven weeks and the square will be closed to through-traffic for a fortnight during the course of the works.

The footway adjacent to the railway from Walkers to the footbridge will be closed for safety reasons but there will be access to the public toilets.

Pedestrians will be routed around the edge of the square while work takes place. The bus stop has been taken out of use until a new one is in operation.

Residents have complained about the disruption and loss of parking spaces but the county council says additional spaces have been created in Station Road and St Leonards Road to cope with the overspill.
