Diamond couple

MARJORIE and Bill Evans celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Friday.

Marjorie and Bill, of Nursery Way, Heathfield, married at Old Bermondsey Church, in November 1942. Bill, who was in the RAF, was just about to be posted to Hong Kong.

Bill had previously worked for the fire service and it was at a fire service dance that the couple first met.

After returning from Hong Kong, Bill worked in a bakery before buying the first of four newsagent shops, one of which was in Maidstone.

Marjorie said: 'Eventually, we decided we'd had enough of early mornings. So one day, we were driving around when we saw these houses going up in Heathfield. We've been here 22 years.

Bill got a part-time job in Piper's newsagents where he worked until his retirement this year, aged 80.

The couple have three children and seven grandchildren, with a great grandchild expected in January.

On her secret to a long and happy marriage, Marjorie, 79, said: 'Keep working, keep fit, share and compromise on every situation.

Neither of us can stand rows life's too short!
