It was a case of marrying the boy next door for Dennis and Jenifer Leister after his parents took over the pub next to her parents’ house in Ringmer.

Sixty years later they still live in Ringmer and celebrated their diamond anniversary last Thursday with a party for family and friends at the Green Man.

They also had a diamond ring Dennis, 86, bought Jenifer, 81, for an anniversary present blessed at the church.

Mrs Leister, who was born in Ringmer, said her husband’s parents moved from Lewes to take on the pub next door at Rushey Green when he was seven.

He can remember her aged about ten holding her mum’s hand but they she was aged about 15 when they first became friends.

They only moved out of Ringmer for about ten years when they were first married.

Mrs Leister worked in the health department at County Hall for 11 years and then for 31 years at Ringmer nursery school.

Mr Leister worked for 60 years at Harper and Eede in Hurst Green, starting out as an apprentice blacksmith and then moving on to welding and becoming a foreman for 34 years.

The couple, of Broyle Lane, have two adopted children, Nicky and Martyn, - ‘the best thing we did in our married life’ -and grandson Joe.

“You have to look after each other and do what you can for them,” said Mrs Leister.
