Diamond Jubilee events in and around Battle

Battle itself will be a hive of activity this weekend, starting with the grand opening of the Beautiful Battle Diamond Jubilee Garden at 6pm today (Friday).

And sticking with the theme of all things horticultural, there will be a feast for the senses at St Mary’s Church, with a Celebration of Flowers running every day from June 2-5, 10am-5pm.

On Monday, as part of a nation-wide attempt to light at least 2,012 beacons to mark this historic milestone, a beacon will be lit on Battle’s Abbey Green.

Others are also due to be lit at various points throughout Rother, including Brightling Mount in Brightling, Swan Meadow in Burwash, Burwash Common Playing Field, Catsfield, St George’s Church in Crowhurst, Dallington Recreation Ground, Stage Field in Hurst Green and Staplecross Playing Field.

On Tuesday, Battle Bell Ringers will herald the start of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Day with a complex three-hour peal of bells, starting at 9.30am.

And there will be no taking it easy for the Battle Chamber of Commerce.

After two days of keeping the crowds entertained at the annual Battle Mediaeval Fayre, members will host a Jubilee Tea Party on the Abbey Green, 12.30-3.30pm.

Entertainment will be provided by the Cinque Ports Lindy Hoppers, whilst the Bull Inn, Martells, Battle Deli and Teall’s Fruit and Veg will supply the food.

And to keep the young visitors happy, pony rides will be available, along with free candyfloss for the children, courtesy of Battle Muffin Club.

Tickets are still available from the above businesses for £7.50 each.

Villages across rural Rother will also hold events to mark the historic occasion, including the much-anticipated Jubilympics at Robertsbridge recreation ground on Monday.
