District parks awarded prestigious Green Flag

The Railway Land in Lewes and Castle Hill in Newhaven have been named as two of the best nature reserves in the UK.

The two local nature reserves are managed by Lewes District Council and have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

This is the sixth year in a row the Lewes Railway Land has received this esteemed award and the fifth year in a row for Castle Hill.

Dan Fagan, community ranger for Lewes District Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy. This award recognises the fact that people in the Lewes District are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.

“I would like to extend a special thank you to the Meadows Minders at the Lewes Railway Land and the Friends of Castle Hill local groups for their volunteer efforts in helping maintain and enhance these Local Nature Reserves for people and wildlife.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
