Ditchling Film Society: Tonight, 3 November, the Society is showing Theeb. Set in 1916 during the period known as the Arab Revolt when Arab nationalists sought independence from the Ottoman Turks. Events are seen through the eyes of Theeb, a Bedouin child who has never had any contact with the world outside his desert community. During these years, traditional Bedouin culture was disrupted by a railway nickamed the Iron Donkey Trail which connected Damascus and Medina. However, sadly it would soon eliminate the need for Bedouin pilgrim guides. Our hero Theeb experiences a greatly hastened coming of age as he embarks with his elder brother on a perilous journey to guide a British officer to his secret destination. Director: Naji Abu Nawar. Arabic 2015. 100 mins. 15 Cert. The next film is The Dressmaker starring Kate Winslet which is being shown on Thursday 10 November. Director: Jocelyn Moorhouse. English 2015. 118 mins. 12A Cert. Films are shown in Ditchling Village Hall starting at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Free coffee and biscuits and wine can be purchased. There is ample parking behind the Village Hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for the sum of £5 payable at the door.
