Figures show that in the UK 24 per cent of men, 26 per cent of women, 19.2 per cent of 10 to 11 year olds and 9.5 per cent of four to five year olds are classed as obese.

Being overweight and obese can increase the risk factors of getting coronary heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, sleep disorders such as sleep Apnea, and some cancers.

The levels of men and women suffering from high blood pressure and being admitted to hospital through weight related issues are increasing every year, which puts pressure on the already stretched health service.

So why are people getting obese?

-easy access to foods high in sugars, fats and salts

-lack of education around healthy eating principles and behaviours

-energy imbalance from eating too many calories and not getting enough physical activity

-inactivity through more inactive jobs and pastimes

-increasing use of cars and public transport as opposed to walking

There are many ways to get more active, some of which are even free, and even small changes to diet can help to get that important five a day.
