Dog found riddled with shotgun pellets

An animal lover from Bexhill is appealing for a new home for a dog found with more than 60 shotgun pellets covering it from head to tail.

Gillian and Robert Schifreen, who split their time between Bexhill and Portugal, volunteer at the Caldas Da Rainha dog shelter, run by charity CRAPAA.

Hazel was found at the side of the road along with two puppies, despite ‘only being a border collie-sized puppy herself’.

Riddled with shotgun pellets, Hazel was also suffering from lead poisoning which had been passed on to the pups.

“When Hazel came in she was in very poor condition and continued to go downhill,” said Gillian.

“She was becoming lame and very sick and the vets were treating her for a virus.

“Her puppies also began to be ill and they had to be removed from her.

“Luckily they both have new homes.”

Gillian has been fostering Hazel while the dog undergoes an extensive course of drug treatment.

However, she cannot look after her permanently due to her own two dogs being quite territorial and is now appealing for UK dog lovers to offer Hazel a home.

Hazel is now fit and healthy and able to live a happy life.

But Gillian said because the Portuguese rarely adopt dogs unless they are small puppies, the one-year-­old will most likely live its life out in the shelter if a home is not found in the UK.

Hazel is house trained, friendly with other dogs and able to walk on a lead.
