Dogs galore have barking good show at Bognor Regis dog training club

One of the most successful shows held by Bognor Regis dog owners saw pets from around the south-east take part.

Dozens of dogs and their owners turned Jubilee playing fields in North Bersted into canine country on Sunday.

The occasion was the annual companion dog show hosted by Bognor Regis and District Dog Training Club.

Its popularity was shown by a winners' list which included entries from Kent, Hampshire and Surrey as well as West Sussex.

Former world and Olympic figure skating champion Robin Cousins opened the show accompanied by his dog.

He is the patron of the Sussex Pet Rescue Charitable Trust, which will benefit from the event's proceeds.

The pedigree class was very popular. Top dog judged by Anita Deadman was Mollie, a golden retriever, owned by Miss Hallworth from Surrey who collected the best in show award. The best puppy trophy went to Blaze, a German shepherd, owned by Mr Pucknell from Maidstone in Kent.

The four levels of obedience were very competitive. The advanced class proved to be of a very high standard in its tests of heel work, recalls, stays and the challenging scent retrieval.

Top honours went to border collie Jess, owned by Cynthia Roffey, from Cranleigh in Surrey.

The starters' class was won by Bracklesham Bay resident Nicole Nagel's cross breed, Frisbee.

The triers' class honours went to Jim, a working sheepdog, owned by Rhia Mulrenan from Findon, while Bognor woman Shirley Finch's working sheepdog, Havoc, was top of the improvers' class.

The novelty classes were judged by Anna Jones and were as popular as usual with their mixture of fun and competition.
