Donkey delight at Shoreham nativity treasure hunt

VISITORS to the Christmas Shorheam Farmers' Market on Saturday were greeted by nativity characters.

A host of angels, shepherds, wise men, an innkeeper and other characters were in East Street to encourage people to take part in the annual Christmas treasure hunt.

The characters were all members of Shoreham Baptist Church who donned costumes and gave out the forms.

Families had to read the nativity story and give passwords from it to each characters, who then stamped the forms.

Once completed, the forms were taken back to the baptist church in Western Road, where families could meet Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus and crib.

People taking part were given free chocolate treasure and other refreshments and were able to join in some craft activities, making cards and Christmas decorations.

Nick Hough, who played the innkeeper, said: “The treasure hunt is becoming a regular event at the Christmas market and it was enhanced once again this year by the addition of a live donkey, kindly loaned by friendly local farmer David Cross from Mile Oak Farm.

“The animal was hugely popular with the children and provided a great photo opportunity.”

The overall winner, picked from a hat, was given a £25 voucher for Toast by the Coast.

On Sunday afternoon, there was a family Donkey Tales service with carols, crib, craft and cake.

The church’s annual carol service is on Sunday at 6.30pm.
