Mark Sephton, 45, described the five brightly coloured doorways as a ‘modern twist on Stonehenge,’ which will remain in place for two weeks near Worthing Pier and The Lido.
Dubbed ‘Doorhenge’, the doors are bright in colour and are mirrored so people can glance through them at a number of different angles, while ‘exploring’ the nearby surroundings.
The installation was erected by ECE Architecture and branding agency Creative Forager on Saturday morning, and Mark, who is creative director for the agency, said he was happy to see many people interacting with it on the beach, especially during the Summer Solstice on Monday.
He said: “Most of the design work was about attracting the surroundings around the design, and capturing colours and giving it a fresh twist. We were looking at an iconic form and then with Stonehenge it just became like that actual form, so we took it from there.
“We are really happy with the result. We observed people interacting over the weekend, and it was great to see them weaving in and out, mixing with the colours, and looking at the reflections. It is about looking at things from different angles.”
Each of the five doorways is made of brightly painted plywood and mirrored acrylic, and stands at 2.3m tall, 1.4m wide and 0.5m deep.
The teams were also responsible for creating a striking mirrored beach hut last year.
Mark added: “The doorways installation is a modern twist on Stonehenge that takes a familiar architectural form and places it out of context to create a playful environment for the public to engage with.”
ECE managing director Stuart Eatock said: “We wanted to create another surprise for the people of Worthing and if that makes them look at architecture in a fresh way, then that’s great.”
ECE are also running a competition on Twitter and Instagram rewarding the best image of the doorways with an Apple Watch.
