Dorset House School pupils experience wartime '˜evacuation'

Pupils from a Bury school took part in an evacuation experience.

20 children from Year Four at Dorset House School gathered with their families at Pulborough railway station where photographs were taken before the children boarded the train.

The children then headed South to Amberley with their teachers.

At Amberley, the children climbed off the train before walking along the banks of the River Arun to Bury Manor (aka Dorset House School).

On arrival, they were met by `Lord and Lady Marconi’ who welcomed them into their home. They made their own beds before tucking into War Time delicacies such as shepherd’s pie and apple crumble. They played tiddlywinks and sang wartime songs until the air raid siren sounded and they had to take shelter.

The theme continued throughout the week with SPAM fritters and rice pudding (and a rationed amount of jam) served at lunch. They also made their own soup and dressed in their 1940s clothing all week. The pupils learned about `making do and mending’ and the week finished with a visit from the Rainbow Theatre Company who performed `We’ll Meet Again’.
