Double yellow line blunder in Bognor Regis

A PAPERWORK blunder means motorists can park on double yellow lines in Bognor Regis.

The mistake applies to the crescent-shaped access road to the former Lec Refrigeration site. The buildings are still partly used by an independent fridge maker as well as the offices of site owner Sime Darby London.

Managing director Raof Daod said the parking had become a serious problem.

He said: "We realise the authorities do not have unlimited resources. Therefore, we have tried to take a collaborative approach but we have faced aggravation, including abuse hurled at our staff '“ something we feel is not acceptable.

The road arcs behind a car showroom on the A29 Shripney Road and leads to the main entrance of the former Lec fridge and freezer site.

Mr Daod raised the problem at the latest meeting of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee of parish, district and county councillors. It was held just over two weeks after the enforcement of on-street parking around Bognor switched from the police to Arun District Council.

Kevin Basford, the council's head of environmental amenities and community safety, said the access road parking ban was excluded from the change-over because it could not be enforced.

The double yellow lines lacked the required signs and legal paperwork.

"We are going to rectify the situation, reinstate the lines and put up the proper signage. That should be completed by the end of August," he said.

"Once we have confirmation the parking restrictions are legally enforceable, we will send in an enforcement team. We will resolve the situation as speedily and efficiently as we can."

Tracey Webb, the county council's area highways manager, said the parking ban could have been enforced until the enforcement changeover in early July.

Solving the problem was complicated by a recent request from the police for the road's double yellow lines to be removed.

She suggested a meeting between herself, the police and Mr Daod to find a solution.
