Down it goes........

A NEW recycling transfer station has been opened in St Leonards. Veolia Environmental Services has completely refurbished the old site and hope the changes will lead to a vast increase on the amount of recycling done in the town.

Guests at the opening last Thursday gathered to watch the demolition of a 40 metre high chimney stack, which has been standing there since 1994.

Tony Miles, operations manager for Veolia said: "With the removal of the chimney, and the establishment of waste transfer, the people of Hastings, Rother, and the whole county can look forward to a facility which provides an important service to the local community by helping them recycle more and ensuring their waste is properly taken care of."

The Waste Transfer facility takes household recyclables and residual waste collected in Hastings and the surrounding area and bulks it up for onward transport to recycling companies and for residual waste for energy recovery or disposal.

The facility also gives a boost to the county's need to meet recycling, recovery and landfill reduction targets and provides a much needed long term waste transfer facility as part of the new waste infrastructure planned for the area.

Chris Maltbaek, managing director for Veolia Environmental Services South Downs, who was present at the chimney demolition said: "We are glad to make these changes and would like to encourage peope to carry on reducing, reusing and recycling and diverting more waste from landfill."
