Driver charged after car flattened lamp post in Wick

POLICE have charged a Rustington man with drink-driving and driving while disqualified after he lost control of his car and hit a lamp post in Wick on Sunday night (March 1).

Daryl Mason, 23, a builder of Epsom Gardens, was arrested near the scene of the crash, which happened shortly before 7.45pm.

Mason’s blue VW Passat hit a lamp post, which fell into the path of a white Nissan Primastar van, near the roundabout junction of the A259 and A284, by the Morrisons supermarket.

The front and underside of the van and its fuel tank were damaged, causing a diesel spillage. An eyewitness said the A259 was plunged into darkness when the street lighting failed. Neither driver was injured.

Mason was also charged with failing to stop after a road accident and driving without third party insurance. He was bailed to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on March 16.
