Driver pays dear for quick beer

A motorist faces losing his job after being caught drink driving.

Andrew Dellow, 39, of Marley Lane, Battle, was spotted by police in the early hours of June 17 in Carlisle Parade in Bexhill.

At a court hearing on Monday in Hastings, Mark Kateley, prosecuting, said police became concerned about his driving as he appeared to be going too fast.

Mr Kateley said: "The defendant admitted having had a pint of beer after picking up his brother. He failed a road-side breath test as the reading was 50mcg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath."

The legal limit is 35mcg.

Hastings magistrates heard that Dellow was convicted of drink driving and failing to stop after an accident in Germany in July 1998.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of drink driving when he appeared in court on Monday.

Aiden Harvey, defending, said: "The defendant is employed as a foreman for a brick company and will now lose his job as a result of this case. He was only slightly over the limit."

Magistrates banned Dellow from driving for 12 months, fined him 150 and ordered he pay 85 court costs.
