Detective Sergeant Leighton Morgan, of Bexhill CID, said: “This was completely unprovoked and the victim did not know these two men. He was left pretty shaken.

“The driver was travelling south towards the town centre, intending to go to the bank.

“One of the men stepped out into the road and flagged him down, and as he stopped he was threatened by this man with a weapon.”

The other man opened the passenger door and stole the money, which was in a blue plastic carrier bag.

Police would not give any further details of the weapon, except to confirm it was not a firearm.

DS Morgan, who is leading the investigation, said both men then ran off, one heading into Barrack Road and the other up Chantry Lane towards the Old Town.

The man who ran into Barrack Road was in his early 30s and wore a black hoodie and blue jeans. He was 6ft tall.

The other, who was 5ft 10ins tall, wore a dark top and blue jogging bottoms. Police said this man would have been holding a bright blue carrier bag.
