NEW Seahaven police figures show total crime fell by 10 per cent over spring and summer while burglaries at businesses increased by 25 per cent.

The number of reported crimes along the coastal stretch from Telscombe to Seaford, for the period April to August 2001, fell from 1,727 to 1,557, compared to last year.

But at the same time burglaries at business premises and on industrial estates rose a quarter from 100 to 125. Cradle Hill Industrial Estate in Seaford bore the brunt of the break-ins.

Seahaven Division Inspector Ron Preddy said: Naturally, I am extremely pleased to see a 10 per cent reduction in overall crime for the first five months of the policing year. They reaffirm the belief that the Seahaven sector does not have high levels of crime.

He added: However, there is no room for complacency because we can and will do better, especially with regard to vehicle crime and burglaries other than from dwellings. Some initiatives are in the pipeline including a high profile media campaign aimed at putting the brake on vehicle crime.

Clearly, police and public must work closer together to maintain the pressure on those who, if given the slightest chance, like to spoil the quality of life of others.

There was a small increase in theft of vehicles, 65 to 66 ( two per cent), and acts of violence rose from 234 to 245 (five per cent).

All other recorded crime fell residential burglaries from 96 to 68 (29 per cent), theft from vehicles, 238 to 205 (14 per cent), criminal damage 479 to 375 (22 per cent).

Drug offences dropped by nearly a half from 40 to 22 (45 per cent)
