Dunsfold driver banned from roads after drinking half a bottle of wine whilst driving

Ruth Brown, of The Common, was arrested on June 24 after police received a call from a member of the public who said he had nearly been run over by a drink driver.

Police said the witness then watched the 55-year-old crash into a grassy embankment on the junction of Chapel Hill, narrowly avoiding another vehicle.

They added on arrival officers found Brown stood at the rear of her car and noted she smelt strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech and glazed eyes.

More than two hours after the accident a breathalyse test found Brown had 106 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of alcohol in her breath with the legal limit being 35mg.

Police said in an interview with Brown she admitted to drinking a bottle of wine at lunch while in Exeter, and then drank another half bottle of wine which she had placed into an empty Costa Coffee and drank en-route.

She was sentenced at Guildford Magistrates Court on July 9.

Brown was banned from the roads for two years, ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the next year, told to pay court costs of £85, a victim surcharge of £60 and a criminal courts charge of £150.
