Ninety-six percent of GMB union members at Onyx UK voted in favour of industrial action after 10 months of pay negotiations failed.

"We are taking action with great reluctance," said GMB organiser Gary Smith, "our members regret the inconvenience the strike will cause to the public."

Onyx is contracted to Arun District Council, which is keen to reassure Littlehampton residents that, with contingency plans, rubbish collection will still go ahead tomorrow.

Arun District Council cabinet member for environmental issues Ricky Bower said: "While we hope this dispute can be resolved quickly, I would ask that residents ensure access to dustbins is clear and simple at all times.

"For example, placing your refuse at the edge of your property will help us to keep disruption to a minimum during any dispute."

Onyx workers earn 5 an hour and, according the the union, many may depend on social security benefit to live.

The GMB approached Arun earlier this month, to take part in three-way pay talks, but council leader Norman Dingemans said it was not appropriate for the district council to intervene in the matter, but said he hoped the two parties would be able to reach a resolution.

"Councillor Dingemans has rejected three-way talks involving Onyx, the council and GMB about how we can tackle poverty pay and that is regrettable," added Mr Smith.
