Dynamic Duo's Triumph

CAROL Humphrey and Malcolm Paradine kept up their remarkable run of success in the Littlehampton Town Show, as champions, respectively, of the domestic and vegetable classes for the 11th year in a row.

Both remain the only winners of their trophies since the show was revived in 1992, Carol again taking home the Cuff Miller Cup for most domestic points and Malcolm the Allotment Cup for most vegetable class points.

Carol's record at the Flintstone Centre on Saturday continued in spite of fierce competition in the domestic classes, where the total of 154 exhibits was up 20 per cent on last year.

After a high point of well over 600 overall entries last year, this year's figure of 594, from 92 exhibitors, was still regarded as excellent by show manager Alan Humphrey.

"Considering a lot of other shows in this area have seen exhibits well down this year, we were pleased with ours, and the number of paying visitors, 344, was an encouraging increase over last year.

"We have quite a few new exhibitors and one or two picked up first prizes, which shows you don't have to be a hardened exhibitor to be successful."

Mixed weather, including hot, dry spells and cold, wet conditions this year might have played a part in cutting back the gardening entries, added Alan.

"The drop in the horticulture entries was probably a reflection of the difficult growing conditions this summer the torrential rain and strong winds the Monday before the show certainly affected the dahlias."
