Opened in 1902, the East Hill lift is seen as the gateway to the Country Park and beauty spot Ecclesbourne Glen. Each year it carries thousands of tourists to the East Hill and the race is now on to repair it in time for the rush of summer visitors.

Because of the specialist nature of repairing funiculars, Hastings Council is trying to trace the company which fitted the damaged section more than 30 years ago.

A council spokesman said: "The East Hill lift is due to be replaced next year although if the damage is severe it may be replaced earlier than anticipated.

"We will try and get it open as soon as possible."
