East Preston carnival prince and princess named

A special assembly was held last Wednesday, when the chosen prince and princess received £25 each and a silver cup, and the runner-up prince and princess won £15 and a small shield.

Teacher Sue Tabor, who organises the prince and princess competition at the school, said: “Lots of children put their names forward to be the prince and princess and the whole of years five and six voted for who they thought would be best to represent the school in the carnival procession.”

Ann Bird, volunteer co-ordinator, announced the winners in reverse order and presented the prizes.

Runner-up prince Freddy Ireland, ten, was handed a special Braille certificate, as he is registered blind.

He said: “Oh thanks. My favourite thing in the festival is the party on the green.”

Runner-up princess Emily Rawlins, 11, said she was delighted. She and Freddy will ride in the open-top bus for the procession.

Riding in the open-top car will be prince Sebastian Tejeiro-Mason, 11, and princess Ella Dallimore, 11.

Ella said: “I had no idea I would win.”

Sebastian added: “I am very excited.”

Mrs Bird also thanked Finch & Co hairdressers, in Sea Road, East Preston, who will be doing the children’s hair for the procession.

She told the children the festival had been running for 34 years and said the school would receive £100 from the festival committee.

“Everybody can take part,” she said. “There are lots of fantastic things going on for the whole week and there are lots of new things this year.”

She highlighted the seaside prize picture hunt at the library, flag making at Kerry’s Tearoom, in Sea Road, the sausage sizzle, Scalextric racing, free tennis coaching and the dog show, which she said was always a favourite.

Janine Nicholson, from the East Preston festival committee, said the Punch and Judy and barbecue at the Seaview Hotel, would also be great fun for families.
