East Preston’s Rascals are actually nothing of the sort

They may be known as Rascals, but officially, they are good.

That’s the verdict of education watchdog Ofsted on East Preston’s Rascals After-School Club, which has achieved its first overall “good” rating, after previously being graded “satisfactory”.

Co-owners Tim and Emma Jackson declared themselves “delighted” with inspector Jill Steer’s positive report, following her visit to Rascals at its base at the East Preston Youth Centre, in Lashmar Road.

Said Tim: “We feel that this recognition is all down to a fantastic team at Rascals, led by our manager Niki Websdale.”

The inspector’s summary states: “This provision is good. Children are at ease in the club, they are happy and confident to engage in a wide range of activities, which help them to develop a good range of skills.

“Children are kept safe and learn to keep themselves safe. Sharing, taking turns and respecting each other are valued and children behave very well.

“Strong partnerships are established with parents and other professionals.”

She adds: “It is not yet outstanding because the resources and experiences used to represent children from all cultures and backgrounds are limited.”

The privately-run club, formed in 2005, opens from 7.30-9am and 3-6pm weekdays, in term time, and from 8am-6pm during school holidays and on school inset days.

There are 40 places and 160 children currently on roll. Several have special educational needs and/or disabilities.

The report says the seven staff support children well and show an interest in what they are doing. “Children are well behaved because the staff are good role models,” it states.

Charlotte Edwards, whose son attends Rascals, said: “I cannot say enough good things about Rascals. Emma, Tim, Niki and the others make my life as a working mum bearable.

“My son is picked up after school, entertained, challenged, and cared for, not an easy combination, and has a great time. He is happy, therefore I am happy.”
