The protest march – organised by the National People’s Assembly – will see members of the Eastbourne People’s Assembly as well as other anti-austerity groups from around the UK travel to the capital on Saturday (April 16).

Members of the Eastbourne Green Party will also be taking part in the march and will call for the closure of offshore tax havens in light of the Panama Papers.

A Green Party spokesman said, “The shortage of public funds is partly due to the chronic lack of adequate tax revenues from rich corporations and individuals. This has been a problem for many years, but the publication in recent days of the Panama Papers has revealed the shocking scale of tax avoidance by the rich, especially by the UK rich.

“Reclaiming just a small amount of the money currently stashed away in tax havens facilitated by one single Panama firm would help us avoid any of the savage cuts in public services that have been made so far since 2010.

“The Eastbourne Green Party condemns the failure of the Conservative government to tackle tax dodging seriously, a failure that has huge impacts upon us all, including here in Eastbourne, where poverty, deprivation and homelessness is increasing and the local foodbanks and charities are at full stretch trying to cope with the awful, inhumane impacts of austerity policies.”

The protest is open to all with local protesters meeting at Eastbourne station at 10.30am on Saturday before taking the train to London Victoria.
