Eastbourne air show safety tightened after Shoreham disaster

Eastbourne's Airbourne will meet additional safety measures introduced in the aftermath of the Shoreham air show tragedy.

The Civil Aviation Authority said today (Tuesday) that safety measures at all UK civil air shows have been enhanced and it had reviewed every aspect of air display safety.

The recommendations come after 11 men died when a vintage jet plummeted on to the A27 during Shoreham Air Show last summer.

The CAA is enhancing requirements for permissions to hold a display; training and checks for people overseeing displays; requirements relating to the experience, skill and health of display pilots; and the role of examiners who oversee display pilots.

Measures taken in the aftermath of Shoreham will also remain in place - they saw all Hawker Hunter jets grounded, ex-military jets restricted to fly-pasts over land and air shows subject to enhanced risk assessments.

Eastbourne Borough Council organises Airbourne – taking place this year on August 11-14– and said it was confident it would meet additional safety measures.

An Eastbourne Borough Council spokesperson said, “We are reviewing the content of the CAA document published today into safety measures at UK airshows.

“Many of these requirements are already in place and we are confident of being able to introduce any additional safety measures required by the review, particularly because of the extensive multi-agency safety planning procedures and protocols that have been in place for the event for many years.”

The Air Accidents Investigations Branch is investigating the Shoreham incident while the CAA has looked at regulations for all air displays.

Both the CAA and AAIB have yet to make their final reports.
