The exhibition, ‘You and Me’ by artist Elda Abramson, will be displayed at the Birley Centre this month alongside information on how to get involved with refugee support groups based in East Sussex.

Many of the works are inspired by Ms Abramson’s own experiences as a volunteer in the Calais camp.

She said, “My exhibition at the Birley Centre is called ‘You and Me’. Many of the paintings are inspired by my visit to the Calais refugee camp in September. It was one of the best and at the same time one of the worst of experiences of my life. It haunts me.

“Although I find it difficult to describe my experience in words, I hope my paintings will convey something of what I saw and felt to those of you who come to see the exhibition.”

Entry to the exhibition is free, but any donations made or proceeds from sale of Elda’s work will go directly to buy items needed in the camps, such as food and blankets.

There will also be volunteers from local refugee support groups to speak to anyone who would like to know more about providing aid.

Volunteers draw from a variety of experiences including collecting and sorting donations, helping out in the camp in Calais as well as giving frontline assistance to refugees arriving in Greece.

Other fundraising events are being planned including a jumble sale, charity auction and a barn dance.
