Eastbourne woman's tyres slashed '˜for parking in her own disabled space'

Cheryl West, of Hanover Road, says she was horrified to find her car targeted twice and to receive the note saying, ‘You don’t deserve a parking bay, you aren’t disabled’.

The 66-year-old said she received permission to use the bay outside her home so she and her ‘seriously ill’ husband, 76, would no longer be ‘trapped’ in their house. He is a blue badge holder.

She said, “My husband has been seriously ill, he can only walk about 30 yards, just because he doesn’t use a wheelchair somebody has done this.

“I feel I’m going to get a brick through the window next.”

Mrs West is asking the culprit to stop and says just because he doesn’t use a wheelchair it does not mean her husband does not require disabled parking.

“They don’t realise that my husband has got a dreadful lung condition,” she said, “He’s in hospital, we can’t afford each time to have the wheels replaced because we’re pensioners.”

The attacks started on September 24 and again on Saturday (November 3). The first time two tyres were slashed and the car was keyed down one side. The second time one tyre was slashed.

Each tyre has cost the couple £74 to fix and they have also forked out for a car cover. Mrs West says their son has installed a CCTV camera, but it does not work well at night.

She said, “I put up a big note to say whoever’s doing this ‘please stop’.

“Hanover Road is renowned for its parking problems. We have had no trouble until we got this. I think the situation is going to get worse. You can’t understand it.”

A Sussex Police spokesperson said, “A PCSO attended the address to speak with the victim and prevention advice was given.

“If anyone has noticed any suspicious behaviour surrounding the parked cars in this area please report online or call 101 quoting 497 of 05/11.”
