Eastbrook girl raises £600 for primary school's pool

A sponsored walk across Devil's Dyke by a seven-year-old primary school pupil has raised over £600 from family, friends and staff to improve the indoor swimming pool at a Southwick primary school.

When one of our pupils heard how challenging we were finding it to keep our rather ancient swiming pool running, she thought it was time to do something about it,” says Julia Sherlock, headteacher at Eastbrook Primary Academy.

Deciding to take the task of improving the school pool into her own hands, Year Three pupil Kayleigh Jukes came up with the idea of doing a sponsored walk across Devil’s Dyke along the Railway route, a trail which stretches from Hangleton towards Devil’s Dyke. On a glorious day in May, Kayleigh walked a grand total of three miles, accompanied by her dad and Ollie the family dog. When she reached the finishing line, friends and family lined up to congratulate her.

“It must have been a tiring walk, but Kayleigh was fit enough to perform some very stylish cartwheels in celebration,” Mrs Sherlock says.

“This is an absolutely amazing effort and everybody is very proud of her,” she says.

Thanks to Kayleigh’s efforts, Eastbrook is now planning to raise more funds to help make improvements to the pool, with the long term goal of replacing the swimming pool roof. A two-form entry primary school situated in Southwick, Eastbrook is part of the REach2 Academy Trust.
