EASTER BREAK PROMPTS GARDEN WATERING WARNING

Warmer weather and the prospect of more people gardening this bank holiday weekend, have prompted the region's water companies to remind customers to observe hosepipe bans and continue using water wisely.

With dry weather forecast for the south east over Easter - the traditional time when garden enthusiasts spring into action - customers have a crucial part to play in working with water companies to beat the drought.

By not using hosepipes customers can do their bit to help ensure there are sufficient water supplies for drinking, washing and cooking this summer.

Barbara Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, said: "If we get a hot, dry summer, this could be the worst drought in 100 years. Drought affects not only our water supplies but hits the environment and wildlife hard, as river and groundwater levels drop and water quality suffers.

"We all need to do as much as we can to save water, not look for loopholes in hosepipe bans."

Southern Water understands the concerns about the impact of hosepipe bans. However, the decision to introduce such restrictions is not one which is taken lightly.

Meyrick Gough, Water Planning and Strategy Manager from Southern Water said: "The south east has experienced below average rainfall since November 2004, since when we've had the driest period since 1933. It is vital that we all work together to conserve resources so we have enough water for all our daily needs.

"Hosepipe bans can help protect depleted water resources at times of high demand, such as during the spring and summer months, when more people water their gardens.

"This is especially important when there is a drought as a sprinkler, for example, uses over 1,000 litres an hour - as much as six people use in one day.

"While we understand our customers' frustrations about what is or is not allowed within the current legislation, we should not lose sight of the seriousness of the drought.

"We hope everyone will support the sentiment and spirit of the law and do their bit to help.
