Education re-think

UNLESS action is taken to improve education standards for children in care with West Sussex County Council, the cost for both the council and the community will be enormous, County Hall has been warned.

Now new proposals designed to raise low educational achievements amongst those in county council care have been revealed.

The initiatives follow detailed study and research work by a special task force which was set up by the children and young people's select committee.

They were described at a recent meeting at County Hall as a real step change for improving standards.

"I feel we do fail these children, and in some cases we fail them badly, not just in education but in life," said task force member Cllr Susan Knight.

"There are consequences for these young children, and for society. While they are young, it is our chance to do something for them, and now we have a chance."
