Education Secretary opens Rye Studio School

Mr Gove described the school as “the link between great education, a belief in the power of the individual, and a connection with the world of work that makes Studio Schools so important.”

Patrons, Governors, representatives of the Rye Academy Trust, staff and students celebrated the opening of the new school that delivers traditional qualifications in partnership with work placements to offer young people employment opportunities.

Principal Jo Townshend and Chair of the Rye Academy Trust Jacqui Lait joined the opening proceedings with speeches that recognised the fantastic efforts of all those behind the scenes in ensuring the safe delivery of the Studio School on time and of the outstanding students who are bringing the school alive with their drive and ambition.

Rosie Clayton, representing the Studio Schools Trust, followed the Secretary of State on his tour.

Talking to Rye Studio School students Mr Gove said: “This is a school built around you, this is a school where your special talents will be identified and given a chance to grow, and great teachers and people from outside in the community, from business, from industry, will be here to help you to make sure school is not just a fun place to learn, but also it’s a bridge to a great job or a fantastic college place, to a future you can be proud of.”

During a tour of the school Mr Gove sat in on an English class, spoke to students studying textiles and observed a photo shoot for AS exams.

He was also interviewed by students studying production arts about his interests in the creative industries.

In Studio School style, the students used their industry skills and set up a student interview in Creative Media; Harley Gentry and Shannon Suttie questioned Mr Gove on his understanding and support for the Creative Industries and learned of his passion for drama.

This interview will be online on the Studio School website www.ryestudioschool.co.uk after the students edit the footage.

The inspirational student work from art, photography and textiles will be available for all the community to enjoy in the exhibition, Elements, running from June 30 – July 11 10-4 daily with all works for sale.

The visit ended with the cutting of the Rye Studio School cake.
