Eight fire engines sent to Chelwood Gate blaze – in pictures

Fire crews were sent to tackle a blaze at a property in Chelwood Gate.

Eight fire engines attended the incident at a residential property in Lewes Road, Chelwood Gate, on Monday night (April 27). East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7.16pm, we were called to attend a fire in the roof of a large rural property on Lewes Road, Chelwood Gate. Firefighters from Heathfield, Crowborough, Uckfield, Forest Row, Mayfield and crews from West Sussex Fire attended. On arrival, there was a significant fire in the roof area of the property, which was scaffolded and undergoing renovation/repair. Crews used four main jets, two hose reel jets and one hose reel jet internally to help carry out salvage. Crews worked hard in arduous conditions to both tackle the fire and to salvage the property and the owners’ possessions. Crews remained on scene through the night to carry out dampening down of the property and to monitor for any potential flare-ups or hot spots. We are due to carry out a fire investigation this morning.” Police were also called to the incident. A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police were called to a roof fire at a property in Lewes Road, Chelwood Gate at 7.20pm on Monday (April 27). Officers attended to assist with road closures.”
