Elderly care scheme rejectedby Chailey Parish Council

South Chailey residents opposed to an application for an elderly care complex at Gradwell End have met Lewes MP Norman Baker to air their concerns.

Chailey Parish Council is also opposing the scheme by Retirement Villages Ltd for a 40 bed care home, 40 extra care apartments and bungalows, with no ‘affordable housing’ provision.

Although there is a national need for elderly care accommodation, villagers say the greenfield site is the wrong place for such a big development, even though more than 60 jobs could be created.

Chailey Council has rejected the scheme (ref: LW/13/0620) because it is earmarked for land outside the planning boundary and would cause noise, access and traffic problems in the vicinity of Mill Lane where Chailey Secondary School is based. The scheme is a scaled-down version of an application, which was opposed by Lewes District Council and Norman Baker in 2012.

Mill Lane resident Adam Walker said: “We’re getting into the realms of wasting the public purse.”
