Elderly face crossing terror to reach doctor on opposite side

Elderly residents are being forced to drive across a Yapton road to reach their doctor.

Conditions along North End Road were so unsafe for pedestrians that they took to their cars to cross it, county councillor Christina Freeman claimed this week.

She said she was aware two male pensioners in The Croft resorted to driving the few yards to see their GPs on the opposite side of the road.

"Sometimes, you can't cross North End Road because of the speed of the traffic outside the hours when the school is opening and shutting," she told fellow councillors on the Joint Downland Area Committee on Monday.

She used her claims to repeat her plea for a pedestrian crossing on North End Road between the school and The Croft.

County council area highways manager Martin Downy agreed to take a further look at the situation.

He initially thought the number of junctions and accesses along that section of North End Road would make it difficult to find a site for a crossing.

Cllr Derek Whittington, who is in charge of the county council's highways work, said it was necessary to have a written report about the location's suitability for a crossing to find out if it met the priorities for a crossing.

But he warned: "There is a huge demand for light-controlled crossings. It is the policy to install two a year in each area, like the Downland committee."
