Emergency crews responded to an electrical fault at a power substation in Ringmer on Sunday evening (January 10).

Initially, there were reports of a fire at the substation – but it turned out to be electricity arcing, when an electrical current jumps a gap in a circuit or between two electrodes.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: “A fault on a piece of equipment at our substation in Ringmer resulted in electrical arcing, reported to us at 6.05pm last night. The equipment was isolated for repairs at 6.49pm and there was no interruption to power supplies.”

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed it was called to reports of a fire at the substation at just before 6pm.

Crews from Barcombe and Lewes attended, a spokesman said, and Sussex Police assisted in closing a nearby road.
