Lots of local businesses and groups took part, designing an elephant for you to find.

All of this was organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham together with local charity, Born Free, who do fantastic work in the conservation of wildlife.

Born Free’s current campaign is to create an Elephant Sanctuary in Europe, therefore, the Rotary Club invited local primary schools to design their own Elephantastic elephants with the theme ‘Loving Life’ to gain the chance of winning some amazing prizes.

The winning school would get to paint their design on a HUGE elephant and see it sold at auction with 90% of the proceeds of the sale going back to the school.

Also, Born Free would give the winning school their very own personalised, wild elephant adoption! 25% of the overall proceeds of the event would go to Born Free, so we are helping a local charity raise funds just by taking part!

So Year 4 at St Mary’s C of E Primary School in Horsham had their very own class competition. All of the designs were fantastic, because so much thought and hard work had gone into each one.

It was a very difficult decision when deciding on the winner. Mrs Dutson, our head teacher, made the overall decision. Our runners up were Millie Boulter and Regan Vind and our winner was Rhys Slee! Rhys’ design was so detailed and he had really thought about the theme very carefully.

Rhys had included elements such as family, love, seasons, space and God. The prize for these children was to paint their design onto a cardboard elephant with the winning design being sent off to be part of the larger competition.

It was a tense wait, but on Monday September 28 it was announced that Rhys’ design had come runner up in the community Elephantastic competition!

Year 4 were so pleased for him. Unfortunately, the prize of adopting an elephant was only for first place, but as Year 4 had been so excited at the prospect of this Miss Fandrejewski (Year 4 teacher) decided to adopt an elephant for her class using some of the HAS (Home School Association) money raised for Year 4.

Since adopting Jubilee, a baby elephant who lost her mother when she was very small, Year 4 have planned to use non-fiction books and the internet to carry out research so that they can become elephant experts and write to their newly adopted member of the class, as well as potentially raising some funds for Sri Lanka’s Elephant Transit Home who rescued and are now caring for little Jubilee who needs dozens of pints of milk every day! One day, when she is ready, Jubilee will return to the wild.

Thank you Born Free and the Rotary Club of Horsham for allowing Year 4 this amazing opportunity.
